Bloomington Midwest Food Bank partners with Bloomington Kiwanis' Camp Limberlost
Posted June 18, 2009 by Tudy Schmied

Camp Limberlost is a week of fun and learning for kids ages 8-10. Area principals and teachers recommend children who would benefit most and might not otherwise have the opportunity for a summer camp experience. The Bloomington (IL) Kiwanis Club sponsors the camp at Timber Pointe Outdoor Center at Lake Bloomington. Their focus is "serving the children of the world" and the week of camp is often a life changing experience for these kids.

The week of camp for 100 campers costs nearly $60,000. Members of Kiwanis host fundraisers and work hard each year to find restauranteurs and donors who can help with feeding 130 campers. In late May, Midwest Food Bank was able to donate drinks and snacks for the camp. In appreciation,  Kiwanis members spent three nights helping to label and repackage food so it would be ready for June distribution at the food bank. As they were working, a young volunteer (not with the Kiwanis Club) began sharing his excitement about getting to "go to camp" this summer. Yes, he was one of their Limberlost campers. How rewarding it was for the Kiwanis members to serve side-by-side with a future camper.
