Midwest Food Bank Texas has been providing relief to families suffering from food insecurity. The number of those families has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With our participation in the USDA's Farmers to Families Food Box program (story here), we have increased our distributions. MFB Texas is now working Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
In June,, we distributed between $400,000 and $800,000 worth of food each week, with one week rising above $1 Million. Healthy, nutritious protein, dairy, and produce goes out to our partner agencies every day. Sometimes a load of food will arrive at MFB Texas and be distributed on the same day.
To handle this activity, we've refined our volunteer structure. New volunteers have been added, and volunteers are now scheduled and some have defined roles. This has resulted in a consistent flow of volunteer help, covering needed positions all week.
Three partner agencies were added to our regular distributions. With the additional food coming in from the Farmers to Families program, MFB Texas has been able to agencies on our waiting list to participate in distribution.
