Kapu Africa participates in International Day of the Girl

Last fall, around the globe, organizations celebrated International Day of the Girl. Kapu Africa (Midwest Food Bank East Africa), was one of those organizations that celebrated by visiting a school where girls receive an education, a nutritious meal, undergarments, and sanitary products. Christine Mutsoli, Executive Director of Kapu EA, spoke at an event, so awareness continues.

The International Day of the Girl had its tenth anniversary in 2022. It is a United Nations initiative that sheds light on the challenges of girls around the world. Those challenges include child marriage, a lack of basic physical and mental health services, education, and living in violence. According to the UN, 1 in 4 girls ages 15-19 is not in an education program, employed, or receiving training.

For Kapu Africa, that means supporting schools by providing nutritious meals and food so girls can learn and grow. Combining education, nutrition, and essential hygiene products creates a new path for girls.

While visiting a school, Christine heard how food donations matter. Some girls attend school because it is where they get their only meal of the day. School may also be the only place they can access undergarments or sanitary products.
During the last ten years, strides have been made. More girls are completing secondary education, fewer adolescent girls are having children, and there are fewer child marriages. The tenth anniversary of International Day of the Girl celebrated those advancements but wants to continue to accelerate initiatives to improve the lives and girls.

Kapu Africa wants to be part of that worthwhile work.
